Cambodia Bound!

I can scarcely believe it, but Puppets Without Borders will be heading to Cambodia later this year!

I've been selected as one of the Cambodia Creative Four, four international artists who will head to Sihanoukville, Cambodia, for one month to teach art to 100 kids.

Organizers 'Let Us Create' explain why this program is so important: "[During the Cambodian genocide] almost 2 million lives were taken under the Khmer Rouge regime, including 90 percent of the nation’s artists. With an entire generation almost wiped out and the few survivors too frightened to practice their craft, the nations cultural heritage was destroyed. More than three decades since the Khmer Rouge’s reign came to an end, the after effects of its time in power are still felt in Cambodia." I tried to imagine what my life - and indeed our own country - would look like with 90% of our artists stolen away. Gulp.

Shadow puppetry is a traditional art form in Cambodia, and I am hoping to merge my techniques with those from their country, creating an energetic new fleet of puppeteers.
So many wonderful people showed their generosity in supporting Let Us Create's Kickstarter campaign - thank you! I still have to raise another $1000 to cover the rest of my expenses, so if you would like to contribute just click on the link to the right.
